Sweet Beach Boys | Seattle Children’s Photographer | Natalie Hilliard Photography

Our family headed to the beach on a hot *83 degree day in Seattle. Since our summer sun has been shorter than normal we thought we’d take advantage of it before the rain starts. I’m writing this when it’s pouring down rain and 50 something degrees outside.:(For some reason, I just can’t get used to the rain. I’ve lived in Seattle all my life and the rainy season always catches me by surprise!

The boys had a great time playing in the sand. I hope summer extends into October. I’m sure that’s a bit unrealistic!:)

My Artistic Inspiration | Natalie Hilliard Photography | Seattle Wedding Photographer

When asked where I find artistic inspiration for photography and posing, I decided to do a Q & A so that ya’ll can get an idea where I find artistic inspiration as well as where my cool ideas come from. (I’ve always wanted to write ya’ll even though I have never lived in the south). I’ll keep it short – 3 questions worth.

Q: Where do you find inspiration for posing, composing an image, and for stylized shoots?

A: Where do I not? I love old movies, couture magazines, magazine ads, travel brochures, foreign films, fabrics/designs, architecture, clothes, lovers & their body language (yes, I really do study this!), music!!!(I love all types of music and it constantly inspires me and gives me ideas for shoots), era’s (I’m a total vintage junkie and love to look at old photos, Etsy, history, & study the culture of what these times were like. I also gain inspiration from other art forms – painting, watercolor, images from photographers that came before me like Ansel Adams, and at times nature.

Q: Why do you pose wedding couples?

A: This is a very good question. First, I must say I don’t always pose wedding couples. The majority of my images are the couple interacting and me walking around them capturing different angles. When I do pose, it is to accentuate the way they look. I like to have a photo journalistic approach with some directing but try to steer from only posing a couple. I love to provide my clients with a collection of many different looks.

Q. Since there are different personalities and couples, do you tailor what you do to who they are?

A. Definitely! There are some couples who don’t want any posing during their wedding day (and that’s great!), and many who want to look great but need a little encouragement and direction. Each of my couples are unique and different and I love that difference! I love a wedding season that has diversity! I do my best and work very hard to make each client feel great, look the way they envisioned, and to have the best wedding experience they could possibly experience! This really is my number one goal. For the bride & groom to have a perfect day that is about them – not me!

A Few of My Favorite Wedding Things…

Every girl has a few things that she considers her favorites and I’m no exception. I am a little more eclectic than most but I thought I’d share five of my favorite wedding things. The more you shoot weddings, the more you can define what excites you about each one.

My favorite wedding things…there are soooo many to list but the few I am including really excite me about the wedding day. They keep me coming back with new artistic vision and a special love for my client’s long awaited day. So for the first…hands down, an excited bride! One that dreams about her man, is giddy with excitement about her day, has dreamed about this day for a long time, and can’t contain the excitement, smiles, and giggles. She lights up the room & everyone loves to be surrounded by her because of how happy she is. Her wedding day is truly a celebration! Second, details! I LOVE details! The hair clips, the birdcage veils, etsy’ish finds, vintage everything!, Grandma’s brooch, Tiffany’s blue boxes, parasols, COLOR, can’t say enough about color!!!, love notes, the favors, personalized Jones soda, signs, unique bridesmaids dresses, out of the ordinary bouquets, cake toppers, special toasts, colorful shoes!, awesome make up & the list goes on & on. Third, the venue. All venues are not created equal! The natural light in some blow me away even after seeing them before. The lines & textures of buildings, the colors of the latest blooms, the grassy knolls, & the setting. Can’t say enough about an awesome venue! Fourth, emotion! What would a wedding be without emotion? I love when Daddy’s try not to cry but tears escape & roll down their cheeks, Mom’s that sob when they see their beautiful daughters all dressed up, the guests that are wiping tears from their eyes when witnessing one of the most beautiful events that life offers, the laughter that fills the air & the smiles that fill the room, and grooms that lose it when the love of their lives come gracefully down the aisle & into their arms. Emotion, there is nothing like it! Last, but not least, a bridal party with character. I love it when bridesmaids & groomsmen really come out of their shells to make it a special day for their friends. They dance down the aisle, laugh & tease, jump, run, & do crazy things for bridal party pictures, and of course, always have a few tricks up their sleeves to surprise the bride & groom. This day only happens once, why not get crazy & make it a fun celebration!

DIY Bride + Rainy Wedding Day = Fantastic Wedding! | Bellingham Wedding Photographer | Natalie Hilliard Photography

Dana & Amy looked up in the almanac what the driest day in Bellingham was in August & August 7th was it! This day turned out to be a little different than what they expected…it rained hard & non-stop. This bride & groom totally rolled with it, white dress, rain boots & all. The great thing, it couldn’t have been a prettier & more pleasant day filled with love, great friendships, excitement, & a beautiful wedding that was at a family friend’s homestead…this place was amazing! Tire swing, river, a canopy of trees, a rustic little building, raspberry bushes…so much fun!

Amy is completely a DIY bride! She planned all the details of this awesome day so meticulously. The pinwheels & bubbles for the children’s table, the cookie jars filled with Dana & Amy’s Grandma’s & Mother’s famous cookie recipes, homemade aprons for friends to wear as they served appetizers, rosemary lemonade & iced coffee stations with colorful teal & turquoise straws (the lemonade & coffee were delicious!), the hanging lights with lanterns between the trees, all the hand-picked dahlias a girl could want, the hand painted personalized signs that read “Lemonade” & “Spirits” couldn’t get any cuter, and all of this came together with lots of help from friends and family. Everyone cared for each other so much & for the couple it emanated throughout the evening. This outside wedding definitely tops the list as one of the most memorable weddings!
